Thanksgiving is probably the most unique North American holiday around. It is one of the few big holidays that the US (and Canada, but on a separate day) is pretty much exclusive to. Although, with so many North Americans living abroad, celebrating Thanksgiving is actually very common, albeit in a different way, in many countries around the world. In Panama, Thanksgiving is not officially celebrated. But it’s recognized by many Americans, and Zonians (US Canal Zone Residents). Since US Thanksgiving falls this week, we’ll talk about that holiday, and how the tradition can be continued, and celebrated, in Panama. Here are some tips and advice for those looking to celebrate Thanksgiving in panama:
Where can you go out to a Thanksgiving celebration?
If you’re visiting town (Panama City), or simply don’t want to cook, there are a number of options for Thanksgiving dinner, and Thanksgiving parties around Panama City, as well as other expat communities in Panama. In Panama City, the most popular Thanksgiving gatherings are either at big hotels, or the Balboa Yacht Club. Each year, the number of hotels that offer a Thanksgiving dinner or party changes, but there are a few that have been going for years, and are a great, reliable tradition.
The most popular hotel/restaurant gatherings are at the Marriott in El Cangrejo, The Intercontinental in Bella Vista, Las Clementinas in Casco, and the Waldorf Astoria in Marbella. Each gathering offers distinct menus and prices, depending on the year, so we recommend that you check with each for prices and menu options. Typically, a hotel or boutique restaurant will have a prix fix menu including multiple courses and beverages. This price varies by location, but expect to spend between $25-$50 per person, depending on the offering. As we mentioned before, the number of hotels that offer a Thanksgiving dinner increase every year, so if you live near a popular one, it’s wise to check in with them to see if they have a restaurant that is offering the menu.
How to make traditional Thanksgiving fare by yourself
Luckily, living in Panama provides the advantage of having (for the most part) easy access to imported products. Turkey is one of them. Getting a Thanksgiving turkey isn’t too difficult, but chances are, you’ll need to buy a frozen one. Frozen Butterball brand turkeys are available in the Super 99, Supermercado Rey, and Riba Smith supermarket chains. While a frozen turkey may not be what you’re used to, it’s a great, and affordable option here in Panama. You can get a fresh, free-range turkey as well, but chances are you’ll have to arrange that with a butcher or private provider, and it is both very rare and very difficult.
Most other traditional US Thanksgiving fare is easily obtainable, and easy to cook. Pre-packaged gravy, stuffing, and mashed potatoes are very common in local super markets. Due to the US presence in Panama for over 100 years, they have a history of Americans celebrating the holiday. If there’s something you want and can’t find, ask your local supermarket and there’s a good chance they can help you find it. Remember that prices for a lot of these items will be more expensive if they’re imported, and based on demand, not available in large volume.
From everyone at International Relocation Firm, we wish you a very happy Thanksgiving, and welcome you to Panama to enjoy your traditions here.
