Ending corruption is top on voters’ minds in Panama, but they’re split over who offers the most credible promise of change.
Laurentino “Nito” Cortizo, 66, former deputy and minister. Born to Spanish and Greek immigrants, Cortizo studied business in Texas and later worked in Panama’s construction and livestock industries before his election to Congress in 1994. In 2004 President Martín Torrijos named him minister of agricultural development, a position he quit 15 months later when he refused to sign a free trade agreement with the U.S. he believed would harm Panama’s agricultural sector.

Hungary to Open Consular, Trade Mission in Panama.
Hungary will open a diplomatic mission to handle trade and consular affairs in Panama, the foreign minister said on Wednesday, ahead of talks in Panama City.
Péter Szijjártó told MTI by phone that he would meet with President Juan Carlos Varela Rodriguez, Vice President and Foreign Minister Isabel de Saint Malo de Alvarado and Trade and Industry Minister Nestor Gonzalez. A meeting was also scheduled with Archbishop Jose Domingo Ulloa Mendieta.
The foreign minister said he would sign with his partners a higher education cooperation agreement on grants for Panamanian students to study at Hungarian universities.

Global business forum Latin America kicks off in Panama City.
A major business summit to boost trade and investment ties between the UAE and Latin America and Caribbean countries got underway in Panama City on Tuesday with Dubai Chamber announcing the opening of a representative office in Mexico City later this year.
“We are excited to announce the opening of a fourth representative office in Mexico later this year to boost ties between Dubai and Latin American countries,” said Majid Saif Al Ghurair, chairman of Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry, during his opening speech at the Global Business Forum Latin America.
