Panama is a small country, geographically, but despite its size, it offers a very diverse landscape. That’s why, when you’re planning to relocate to Panama, it’s important to pick the best area to fit your needs, and your lifestyle. And Panama has everything, for every taste. Beaches, city life, suburbs, and mountain hideaways; no matter what your choice is, there’s bound to be something for you.
Here are some examples of the more popular places to settle, and what to expect if you choose to live there:
Panama City, Panama
Panama City is the epicenter of both economic and social activity in the country. The city is vibrant, new, and fun, but it can also be expensive and quite fast-paced. Rents downtown are comparable to a mid-sized North American city, with the daily cost of living being a bit cheaper. You will find brand new apartments available with every amenity available in Europe and North America, and most likely, whether you buy or rent, your building will have a pool, spa, and gym.
Nightlife and restaurants are world-class, and well priced, and there are lots of major shopping centers, schools, supermarkets, and hospitals, which are all easily accessible by foot, taxi, or car. Traffic can be hectic, and if you’re easily annoyed by traffic noise, this may not be the best city for you. You don’t need a car; however, you may want to consider one if you’re planning on making regular trips outside of the city.
Boquete, Panama
Boquete is one of the world’s top retirement destinations. It is located in the northwest mountains of Panama, and is well known for its cool climate. It is also very close to Costa Rica, and is set in the heart of the country’s coffee producing region.
Boquete has a big expat retirement community, and as a result has many foreign-owned and local businesses where English is spoken. It’s a small town, and as a result has very few bars and restaurants, however the ones that do exist are often of very high quality, and cater to North American tastes. Property costs for sale/rent are substantially lower than in Panama City, and the day-to-day cost of living is among the cheapest in the world.
Coronado, Panama
Coronado is one of the most modern and developed of the Pacific beach towns, and very popular for both expats and locals. It has white-sand beaches, great restaurants and shops, and warm weather. It is about a 45-minute drive from Panama City, but far enough away from the hustle and bustle to make it a great getaway for many city dwellers. Coronado has many of the conveniences of a modern city, with a variety of luxury villas and condos, as well as more humble houses and apartments along the beach. This area is known to be a bit pricier than some neighboring beach towns, but it’s still a great value, and is very modern and clean. Coronado is ideal for someone who wants to get out of the city, without giving up modern conveniences.
Santa Fe, Panama
In Santa Fe, you will get the authentic, old-world Panamanian experience. Nestled in the highlands of the interior of the country, Santa Fe is known for its favorable climate, wildlife, and laid-back pace. If you are looking for nightlife, or a vibrant social scene, this town may not be for you. The beauty of Santa Fe is in its local character, and breathtaking natural backdrop. You can take a nature hike from nearly any part of town, and its safe, clean, and friendly.
Tropical foliage and animals are abundant, and a big draw for tourists, and those looking to settle. Santa Fe is also famous for its orchids, which seem to grow everywhere, as well as over 300 varieties of wild exotic flowers that pepper the local fields and gardens. The cost of living is very cheap, although due to its small size, the variety of shops and restaurants are limited.
Pedasi, Panama
Pedasi is a small town on the Azuero Peninsula, which is a good distance away from Panama City, in the southwest section of the country. Pedasi is fairly remote, and as a result, attracts many people who want a quiet life on the beach, away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Services are limited, but as the town grows, the infrastructure is improving, and becoming more modern every year. Pedasi is a great place to surf, swim, and fish. The beach life is alive and well in Pedasi.
Pedasi housing prices are very reasonable, and considering its proximity to the ocean and natural surroundings, you will find a lot of value for your dollar. Getting to and from the capital can take some time, however there are bigger towns and cities nearby should you need something you can’t get in Pedasi.
